Following last year’s online-only event, the atmosphere on the ground was electric as the art community came together to celebrate the creators making waves in L.A.

Taking place in a new venue adjacent to the Beverly Hilton Hotel from February 17–20, the fair opened its doors to 30,000 visitors, featured 100 galleries and welcomed online guests from 108 different countries.

Frieze’s return to L.A. was poignant for many reasons. The characters, colours and sounds make it a fair like no other and the delight at experiencing its unique energy after so long was palpable.

As Christine Messineo, the new Director of Frieze Los Angeles and Frieze New York, said, “It has been a fantastic week at Frieze Los Angeles and I am thrilled with the response. The atmosphere has been joyous both at the fair and across the city. It feels so good to reunite.”

Diante Singley’s Greyhound wins the Deutsche Bank Frieze Los Angeles Film Award

The magic of filmmaking is an intrinsic part of the city, and 2022 saw the third edition of the Deutsche Bank Frieze Los Angeles Film Award take place. The award is a collaboration with Endeavor Content and Ghetto Film School that provides a development programme for emerging L.A.-based filmmakers, as well as a $10,000 prize.

Ten filmmakers were in the running, each creating a film that reflected on how they were facing change – as storytellers, global citizens and human beings.

The winner, chosen by a jury comprised of leading figures in contemporary art and entertainment, was Diante Singley. His film Greyhound is a poetic, visually striking film about a young man preparing to leave his home and community before his freshman year of college. The Audience Award, voted for by the public online and now in its second year, was given to Adham Elnashai for his film Rahma.

Claudio de Sanctis, Head of International Private Bank, CEO EMEA, Deutsche Bank, said: "In our 19th year as Global Lead Partner of Frieze, it is a real honour to work with Endeavor Content and Ghetto Film School for the third time to support emerging artists in Los Angeles, in a medium that is close to my heart. This year’s theme, ‘Facing Change’, is one that every one of us can relate to and I want to send my congratulations to each and every one of this year’s fellows, who produced a selection of moving and inspiring short films of which they can all be very proud."

You can watch all ten films from the contest on Frieze.com.

Revisit Frieze Los Angeles with Art:LIVE, our online programme

As part of our commitment to helping more people enjoy contemporary art, wherever they are in the world, we created Art:LIVE in collaboration with Frieze Studios.

The Frieze Los Angeles 2022 edition of Art:LIVE features an exclusive interview with L.A.-born Kehinde Wiley, whose personal reflections on his role as an artist – and being selected to paint President Obama’s portrait – are illuminating and inspiring.

Art:LIVE also features a virtual tour of Frieze Los Angeles, led by Matthew McLean, Creative Lead at Frieze Studios. Matthew talks to gallerists and collectors to take the pulse of the fair – and gets viewers up close and personal with pieces by emerging and established artists.

Art:LIVE is available to stream here.
