Positive Steps towards net zero

How we’ve changed our lounges at Frieze London and Frieze Masters to operate more sustainably.

No matter how big the challenge, there are always positive steps you can take in the right direction. This is why, as part of Deutsche Bank’s commitments to biodiversity and ocean conservation, we’re looking continually for new ways to minimise the impact of our events on the environment – and offsetting any carbon emissions that we can’t reduce by other means, through ocean-related projects.

From fabrics made of recycled ocean plastic to food that hasn't had to travel as far, we’ve thought deeply about every detail of our lounges – and what we can do better. We’ve also begun working with new suppliers who share our commitment to reducing waste and carbon emissions without sacrificing quality. And to ensure we continue to make progress each year, we’ve commissioned a detailed carbon audit from First Climate and will work with fellow members of the Ocean Risk & Resilience Action Alliance to offset our event activities.

Furniture designed for future fairs
Positive Step 1

Furniture designed for future fairs

Made in the UK by Modus, our sofas are covered with Camira’s revolutionary Oceanic fabric, which is created using 100% post-consumer recycled plastic. Consisting of 50% SEAQUAL yarn, made from marine plastic waste found in our ocean, and 50% plastics destined for landfill, this fabric is a recycled polyester with a positive future – its blend of comfort and durability means we can reuse it at future London fairs.

An energy boost that uses less energy

An energy boost that uses less energy

Illy coffee machines significantly reduce energy consumption with their special fast-heating technology. The pods we use are recyclable too. And because we welcome refills, we encourage the use of our reusable coffee cups – or our insulated Ocean Bottles, which keep liquid hot for up to nine hours.

recycled plastic in lounge
Positive Step 3

We want our lounge to look its best without waste

The flooring in our lounge is made from 100% recycled plastic, with the recycler based close to our supplier’s manufacturing plant. On receipt of a delivery of new material into their warehouse, the truck is then filled with a return load of used material, to be delivered to the recycling processing plant to save on journeys and carbon emissions. Anything that can’t be recycled and reintegrated, our supplier offsets by investing in green environmental projects throughout the world.

Fair access that’s fairer on the environment
Positive Step 4

Fair access that’s fairer on the environment

We’ve put a lot of thought into each fair pass. Our lanyards are made from a mix of bamboo fibre and recycled PET. Our badges are made using sustainably sourced wood pulp from Nordic trees, while 90% of the energy used to manufacture them is powered by renewables. Even the clip is made from re-used metal.

We work with Rhubarb, our food supplier, to use seasonal produce that is sourced locally wherever possible and work hard to minimise food waste. Using macerators across their sites, our supplier is able to turn any waste created during the food’s preparation into biofuel. Any meals they make that aren’t used are given to charities and schools so they can serve healthy food and help the most vulnerable in society. What’s more, they provided over 500,000 meals to key workers in the UK and US during the pandemic.

Sustainability by the bottle
Positive Step 6

Sustainability by the bottle

Chilworth Manor is a founder and member of the Sustainable Wines of Great Britain initiative and an exciting new supplier for us in the Deutsche Bank Wealth Management Lounge. As well as taking steps to phase out herbicides, it has also found an eco-friendly alternative to the “frost candles” traditionally used to protect vineyards during cold spells.

Reusable bottles that recover ocean plastic
Positive Step 7

Reusable bottles that recover ocean plastic

Up to 80% of the world's ocean plastic comes from a lack of waste management infrastructure in coastal communities. The sale of each Ocean Bottle funds the collection of 11.4kg of plastic waste bound for the ocean – the equivalent of 1,000 single-use plastic bottles. Combined, our order of Ocean Bottles will support the collection of more than 42,000lbs of plastic. Good news for Ocean Bottle users, for plastic collectors – and for our oceans.

Cutting out cut flowers
Positive Step 8

Cutting out cut flowers

We want our lounge to look its best, but we don’t think it should cost the planet. So, rather than importing flowers to use as decorations, we’ve chosen to use plants that are grown in the UK – even the orchids. After the fair, our trees will be replanted and our plants re-homed. Any green waste will be recycled into compost, nourishing the next generation of plant life.
