Positive Steps at the DB x ORRAA Ocean Conference 2022

We're on a journey to ensure our events operate more sustainably. Discover the steps we're taking towards net zero at our first-ever ocean conference in Mallorca, Spain.

Co-hosted by Deutsche Bank and the Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance (ORRAA), the DB x ORRAA Ocean Conference is designed to demystify the sustainable blue economy and achieve positive ocean impact at scale.

As part of this commitment to ocean and biodiversity conservation, we’re looking continually for new ways to minimise the impact of our events on the environment – and offsetting any carbon emissions that we can’t reduce.

Because no matter how big the challenge, there are always positive steps you can take in the right direction. Learn more about the steps we’re taking below.

Compensating for travel-related carbon emissions
Positive Step 1

Compensating for travel-related carbon emissions

We’re committed to hosting this conference with as few carbon emissions as possible and will compensate the unavoidable carbon emissions resulting from our attendees’ travel to and from the event if they have not already taken their own climate protection measures. By working with First Climate to support a peatland restoration and conservation project in central Kalimantan, Indonesia, we seek to compensate for our conference’s travel-related emissions and contribute to the protection of a natural carbon sink spanning almost 150,000 hectares of peatland.
Choosing a venue built on sustainability
Positive Step 2

Choosing a venue built on sustainability

The Jumeirah Port Sóller Hotel & Spa received an LEED Gold certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) when it was built and continues to take steps to improve its sustainability measures: from reducing water and energy waste to working with majority local vendors to support the local economy and cut CO2 emissions created by shipping.
On the menu: great taste, minimal waste
Positive Step 3

On the menu: great taste, minimal waste

Europe’s seas include some of the most intensively used marine waters in the world, threatened by a range of factors including overfishing, which is why we have chosen not to serve seafood during the conference. Working with Fosh Catering, our Michelin-starred Mallorcan caterer, we aim to ensure that the menu we serve during the gala dinner is seasonal and locally sourced where possible, with a focus on minimising food miles and waste – all without compromising on quality.
Collecting bags full of ocean-bound plastic
Positive Step 4

Collecting bags full of ocean-bound plastic

Each Deutsche Bank x Parley bag is made from 30 intercepted plastic bottles and funds the removal of 10Ibs (4.5kg) of marine plastic waste through Parley's international clean-up network.
Reusable bottles that recover ocean plastic
Positive Step 5

Reusable bottles that recover ocean plastic

Each 100% recyclable Deutsche Bank Ocean Bottle funds the collection of 25lbs (11.4kg) of plastic bound for the ocean. Combined, our order to date will support the collection of more than 297,000lbs (135,000kg) of ocean-bound plastic: the equivalent of a blue whale. By 2025, Ocean Bottle aims to collect the equivalent of seven billion plastic bottles, stopping them from ever entering our oceans.
Conference materials that are kinder to the environment
Positive Step 6

Conference materials that are kinder to the environment

We’ve put a lot of thought into our conference materials. Our lanyards are made from a mix of bamboo fibre and recycled PET. Our event brochure and printed cards are made from sustainably managed forests certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, or recycled from post-consumer waste. Printed without water using state-of-the-art ‘hybrid ultraviolet lithography’, no chemicals are used in the process. Plus, any waste created during production is recycled, with nothing going to landfill.
Responsible culture from cover to cover
Positive Step 7

Responsible culture from cover to cover

LUX magazine treads lightly. This special issue has been printed on FSC™-certified paper made from a mix of post-consumer and responsibly grown virgin pulps. We also worked with a local printer to help cut carbon emissions created during shipping.
Providing a luxury alternative to plastics
Positive Step 8

Providing a luxury alternative to plastics

We’ve sourced locally produced luxury toiletries as an alternative to single-use plastics, cutting down on waste and shipping. Jabón de Mallorca produces 100% natural and handmade cosmetics without parabens or EDTA, artificial colours, preservatives, foaming agents, palm oil or sulphates. They’re designed to be kind to your skin and to the environment too.
Water-saving umbrellas, whatever the weather
Positive Step 9

Water-saving umbrellas, whatever the weather

Our umbrellas’ polyester covers are made of recycled plastics and employ a revolutionary dyeing process that, compared to conventional dyeing, significantly reduces the consumption of water and energy as well as the impact of harmful substances on the environment.
